History Of GFWC

GFWC is an international service organization that promotes community improvement through volunteerism.

The General Federation of Women’s Clubs was founded on April 24, 1890 when 63 independent clubs gathered in New York City and ratified the GFWC constitution. Its roots can be traced to 1868 when Jane Cunningham Croly, a professional journalist, decided to create an influential women’s organization after being denied access to a press club meeting honoring Charles Dickens.

The headquarters are at 1734 N Street NW, Washington D.C.

GFWC is one of the largest organizations of women volunteers in the world.  Visit GFWC and GFWC-WI at the links on the homepage!
